In this tutorial I'll teach you how to make a professional logo!

1. start of with a new document (400x400 px with a white bg)

2. create a new layer and fill it with white, bring up blending options for this layer (layer>layer style> blending options)
apply a black to white (in that order) gradient. Lower the layers opacity to 50%.

2. create a new layer, bring up your pen tool, start from the bottom left.
on your first point make it fairly wide, then lower (but away from the furthest point) a new line. then do another one higher up but still on the right. then do another one (the top one on the left)

3. bring up the text tool and put in the symbol you want to use (I'm keeping things simple and using a number 4)
I suggest for the font: 200px, times new roman, sharp, bold. (to make it bold go to window>character and on the new window select bold)
now rasterize this layer (layer>rasterize>layer)

4. on this layer lets now tweak the perspective (edit>transform>perspective) on the top right point drag it upwards a bit.

now click the move tool, you will be asked if you want to apply the changes, hit keep changes.

5. bring up blending options for this layer. apply a stroke of 3px,outside,normal,80% opacity and #D8D2D2.

6. apply a gradient overlay from #F2390E to #DB7112

7. now apply this drop shadow

you should now have something that looks like this

8. rasterize this layer (layer>rasterize>layer)
hide all layers apart from this layer (with your symbol) now hit ctrl+a to select everything, now shift+ctrl+c to copy merged.
un-hide all layers.
now create a new layer and hit ctrl+v to paste your symbol again. flip it horizontally (edit>transform>flip horizontally).
drag it into position (tip: hold shift to drag in a straight line)

9. from now on you can apply little bits to make it your own!
I applied a small white overlay (ctrl+click on layer to make a selection then select>modify>contract>contract by 2px, then alt drag with elliptical marquee to de select, filled with white and lower opacity to 54% and change to soft light) the text i used is century gothic 12px sharp with character spacing of 100.

and heres my finished product!

Im not a professional, but I do design and make games,
first get a good background,
good things in a logo are:
a gradient or slightly greyed image for the background,
1 slightly transparent image,
initials or name of the cause,
a unique image,
optionaly a slogon not popular but can be used properly to great effect.
