Making a Custom Brush
Tuesday ~ April 04, 2007 by admin Posted in Photoshop, basics
1. Go to File > New. 2. Canvas 100 w x 100 h pixel. 3. Here I am going to make a brush that will make pretty hearts on the canvas when I paint with the brush tool. For this go to the Tool bar, and select the Custom shape tool. 4. At the top from the Shape menu select the heart, you can choose any shape, or even a part from any image that you want. 5. Before you draw this shape on the canvas, press the Fill Pixels button, at the top of the options bar(1). Then draw this this shape on the canvas(2) 6. The heart shape drawn on the canvas. 7. Next hide the background layer by clicking on the small eye icon to turn it off. Now the background of the brush to will be transparent. 8. To make the brush, we need to define what we have on the canvas as a brush. this is easy. Go to Edit > Define Brush Preset… 9. In the Brush Name dialogue box that appears, give the brush a name and hit OK. 10. Next we will try our brush and asjudt a few settings. Open a new canvas again, with the canvas size now 500 w x 500 h pixels. 11. Select the brush tool from the tool bar, or press B. If you paint with this brush on the canvas, you wont see any good results, since the hearts are too close to each other. In the next few steps we will deal with this. 12. In the Brushes palette (top right corner) or simply press F5, you can also open this from Window > Brushes. Here I adjusted the Angle of the tip, and a Spacing of 110%. 13. Shape Dynamics: move the slider to set the Jitter size to 6%, and select pen pressure From the drop down menu , Minimum diameter to 14% , Angle jitter to 100% 14. Scattering: Scatter slider to 246% , Select Pen Pressure from the drop down menu and Count 2. Set Count jitter 14%. 15. Color Dynamics: 16. Turn on ‘Air Brush’ 17. Note here that if you dont save the brush setting, you will lose all the settings you just did. In the Brush window click the small Play button to open up the menu and select New Brush Preset… When the Brush Name window opens give the brush any name and click ok. Now these settings are saved. You can use this brush anytime you need it. 18. The hearts painted with the brush, u can change to foreground/background colors to get different results. Good Luck! hope this helps you guys!
