Realistic Facial Hair in Photoshop
Tuesday ~ April 04, 2007 by admin Posted in Photoshop, photo editing
1. Once you’ve opened up your image, it’s a good idea to create an additional layer to keep the effect separate. Create a new layer and name it “hair”. 2. Now, create a new transparent image of around 200 x 200 pixels. This will be our brush creation canvas. Using a round brush, draw a squiggly line that corresponds well to the contours of a hair. It’s mostly guess work, but sooner or later you’re bound to get it right. 3. Go to Edit > Define Brush Preset and save your brush as “hair”. 4. You may now close this document and return to your original image. Press F5 to bring up the brush palette and select your newfound hair brush. As hair is usually a mess of different strands going in all sorts of directions, we would be well advised to randomize our brush to attain the said effect. 5. To this end, in the brushes palette, tick the shape dynamics box and set the size jitter of the brush to 45 %, the angle jitter to 20 % and the roundness jitter to 25 %. Deactivate all pen pressure modes. Further, tick the scattering box and apply it at a rate of 150 %. 6. Reduce the general opacity of the brush to around 50 % and begin applying it to the image. Black is a good color, since the brush is being tempered by the various settings we’ve just applied to it. 7. Don’t neglect to apply the strokes to the darker areas. These will enhance the overall image later on. 8. If you would like to enhance the highlights of the beard, select a lighter background color and, checking the color dynamics option in the brushes palette, apply a foreground/background jitter. This will make your brush cycle back and forth between both the foreground and background colors. 9. How much you apply the brush is really an aesthetic decision. You can go further and apply it to the head or any other unmentionable area of your choice. 10. heres your finished product! have fun with this guys! hope you like it:)
You may, for whatever reason, be it to play around with an image or change a drawn character’s appearance, want to add facial hair to an image. This can be done to great effect by using the variety of drawing tools in Photoshop.
It is ideal to use a well lit image, but the effect can be applied to any image after proper calibration of your brushes.
